Renowned for their collection of feminine and fashionable women’s shoes – Mollini have emerged to become a leading Australian footwear label. We had the opportunity to sit down with the very talented Melanie Sergeant who is a designer at Mollini to find out about her inspirations, favourite trends and what Styletread customers can expect from Mollini in 2015.
1.What’s a typical day like as a shoe designer?
There is lots of variety in the work that I do. I am always researching trends and seeing what’s going on around the world and in Australia. There is a lot of work in building a range, identifying the key trends that need to be in the range and then putting together the initial concepts, we source our own leathers, trims and materials which requires spending time in leather markets overseas.
2. Where do you gain your inspiration from?
I am inspired by so many things, I love looking at what people are wearing on the streets all around the world and how people put together their individual looks. Although not a big jewellery person I love the mix of colours, metals and wood that is used and that can inspire me for what trims I use on a collection. For spring & summer I find myself naturally drawn to looking to warmer climate countries and the colours & prints that are worn. I am always looking at what is going on around the world.
3. What are the stand-out trends/ key shoe features this spring/summer?
It’s a fresh clean palette for spring summer with white being key tone. Pinpunching and lazer cut detailing in leathers is a strong detail for the season. Although every girl needs her killer heels there is also a swing towards heavier mid heel shapes which makes for really versatile styling.
4. In your eyes, what is the shoe of the moment?
Mules, slides are the must have item for the summer wardrobe. Very 90’s influenced…they work back with your boyfriend jeans, cut of denim shorts, and all the hemlines on skirts and dresses for the season.
5. What are you loving about this Mollini S/S14 range?
I love the mid heel category, great everyday heel heights that have that ability to be dressed up or worn casually. They are cool but understated fashion. Effortless type styling.
6. Your top Mollini shoe picks?
Queff: loafers are a core look and will this will follow on into W15, this style is fresh and great for all year round and Jayman: looks so good on..definitely a stand out style.
7. Which core shoes does every woman need in her wardrobe?
A great sandal in a neutral colour that she can team back with her entire summer wardrobe. A sexy pair of pumps that can dress up a pair of jeans or take you from the office to going out. Ankle boots…your perfect winter throw on..but also very cute back with summer dresses and little shorts.
8. As a designer you are always working on the next season. What should we be looking out for in the upcoming W15?
Ankle boots continue to be a key look, but look out for fresh detailing on leathers, and interest with directional heel shapes. Lace-ups, loafers, and flat shoes in general are a core trend for winter 2015…embrace the influence from the 90’s.
